MANILA, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- A 62-year-old Filipino woman was killed in the deadly quake that triggered tsunami in Samoan islands in the south Pacific, the Philippine government said Friday.
The victim was identified as Godofreda Reambonza-Palma, a Filipino immigrant in Pago-Pago, the Department of Foreign Affairs cited information from the victim's niece. No other details were provided.
The government said it is coordinating with the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu for the immediate repatriation of the remains of the victim.
American Samoa, about 2,600 miles away from the Hawaiian Islands, is home to nearly 3,000 Filipinos.
Samoa declared a national disaster following Tuesday's giant 8.0-magnitude earthquake that churned up waves measuring between 10 and 25 feet which destroyed villages and popular tourist resorts. Ninety people could have been killed in the quake, the island's worst natural disaster in almost a century.
