Death toll from typhoon Ketsana rises to 101 in Vietnam

    HANOI, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Ketsana, which hit Vietnamese central and highland provinces, has left 101 people dead, 23 others missing and more than 200 others injured, the local newspaper Liberty Saigon reported Friday.

    Among the country's 15 central and highland provinces battered by the typhoon, the central highland province of Kon Tum is the hardest-hit with 30 deaths, according to the Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control.

    The central Quang Ngai province is the second worst hit area with 27 deaths. It is followed by Quang Nam and Thua Thien-Hue with nine deaths each, said the committee.

    The typhoon have submerged or destroyed more than 360,000 homes, school rooms and other public buildings.

    Over 73,000 hectares of crops have been ruined. Property loss has been estimated at about 560 million U.S. dollars, said the committee.

    Some national power lines and railway sections have been damaged by floods and landslides.

    Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on Thursday paid a working day to several worst-hit central provinces of the country. The Prime Minister decided to provide 500 billion Vietnamese dongs(about 28 million U.S. dollars) and 10,000 tons of rice to these provinces, said the newspaper.

    According to the National Hydro-meteorological Forecast Center, the two other storms which are moving towards the East Sea are likely to hit Vietnam in coming days.
