JAKARTA, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- An elephant fossil of
200,000 years old found in Indonesia in April went on display Tuesday, the
Kompas.com news portal reported Wednesday.
"The elephant fossil is more than 200,000 years old,
the largest and the most complete one found in Indonesia," Head of Indonesian
Geology museum Yunus Kusumabrata said.
The Jurassic elephant was predicted to have a weight
of 10 tons with a length of 5 meters from head to the tail and a height of up to
4 meters from the ground, he said.
The fossil was displayed in the museum for the first
time on Tuesday.
The fossil was found in a mining site 2 km from
Bengawan Solo, the main river in Blora in central Java province.
Yunus said the excavation was based on a study of
Dutch scientist Von Koeningswald in 1932 during the period of Dutch colonization
in Indonesia.
