KUALA LUMPUR, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- Besides the commonly seen yellow-flesh durian, a durian species with reddish flesh is found in Sabah State in east Malaysia.

"Durian hutan", which literally means "jungle durian," is well known as "sukang" or "tabelak" among the Kadazandusun community in the state. Its scientific name is Durio gravloens.

New Straits Times, a local daily reported here on Monday that as its name suggested, the species was found growing wild in the jungles of Sabah.

The paper said the red durian flesh was thinner and drier compared with the cultivated fruit that was usually thicker and creamier, fetching a lower price of two to three ringgit (0.57 to 0.86 U.S. dollars) each.

New Straits Times quoted Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Masidi Manjum as saying that he did not know anyone cultivating the durian as locals were not fond of that.

Commenting on the taste, Masidi said the jungle durian was generally more pungent.

Some described it having a carrot-like flavor, said News Straits Times.
