RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- In the Brazilian city of Cuiaba, the site of the 2009 FIBA Americas Women's Championship, or the American Cup, Canada beat Cuba on Sunday 59-49.
Winning the third place game, the Canadian women's basketball team qualified for the 2010 World Championships in the Czech Republic.
The Canadians started the game off well, but a series of turnovers and mistakes led the Cubans to get back into the game. After four quarters, the match was tied at 48-48.
In overtime the Canadians dominated. They scored 11 points compared to the Cuban's 1 point. With their third-place finish, the Canadians accomplished what they had set out to do at the American Cup by qualifying for the World Championships.
