Thursday night in downtown Beijing. China's began to review applications of the
the first seven IPOs for listing on the Growth Enterprise Market. A regulation
on "puppy love" in Heilongjiang province has sparked wide controversy among the
public.

Knife-wielding man kills two
Intro:
A man armed with a knife stabbed two people to death
Thursday night in Dashilan, a major commercial center in downtown Beijing. China
News has the details.
PKG:
Police say the tragedy occurred at around 7 pm.
Thursday, 14 injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, where two security guards
died later despite medical treatment.
The attacker, confirmed to be drunk at the time, was
apprehended at the scene by police on patrol.
A preliminary investigation shows the suspect is
46-year-old Zhang Jianfei,a native of Jilin City. Police say Zhang had created
many disturbances under the influence of liquor in his hometown.
An investigation into the matter is still being
conducted.

Six injured now stable
Intro:
Six people injured in a traffic accident involving a
farm vehicle Wednesday night in Tibet are in stable condition. China News has
more from Lahsa.
Pkg:
The patients have undergone treatment at the People's
Hospital of the Tibet Autonomous Region.
Soundbite: Ren Zeng, People's Hospital "The patients
are calm and in stable condition, except for some trauma on the scalp. Generally
speaking, they are OK."
A'mi, the owner of the vehicle, told Xinhua that at
the time of incident, 6 people were in the cab of the truck while 10 sat on the
trailer.
The accident occurred at around 7 p.m. Wednesday in
Damxung county of Lahsa, when the vehicle experienced a mechanical failure, then
turned over after hitting a guardrail.
Five people were killed on the spot. Another five
died on the way to the hospital.

Koppu death toll rises
VO:
Two more are dead and nine others remain missing as a
result of typhoon Koppu, bringing the death toll to nine. According to Guangdong
Flooding and Drought Relief Headquarters, all nine missing were swept away by
flash floods. The others were killed by landslides, house collapses and
flooding. As of 4 p.m. Thursday, more than 1.44 million local residents in 287
townships in the province had been affected.
In southwestern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region,
more than 2,280 people have been moved to safety as of Thursday. Local
authorities say the precipitation brought by the typhoon has relieved the
region's lingering drought. But about 284,000 hectares of cropland and nearly
500,000 people are still short of water.
“East Asian Community”
VO:
China supports the idea of creating an East Asian
Community, put forward by Japan's newly-elected Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said
Thursday it is a long-term objective to establish such a community, in order to
promote lasting peace in the region.
She said, "It is also the consensus of the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations as well as China, Japan and the Republic

Hatoyama has said his government would promote the
long-term project, which would be modelled on the European Union, and include a
common currency.
China pushes for Iran nuclear talks
Gfx:
China is urging for the early return of talks on
Iran's nuclear program. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said at a regular
briefing in Beijing Thursday, "We expect all relevant sides to maintain
confidence and patience, seize the current opportunity, step up diplomatic
efforts, and push for an early return of the talks on this issue."
The talks between Iran and the six major powers,
which include the United States, Russia and China, are expected be held on Oct.
1 in Turkey.
Pakistan to launch first think tank on China
CAM:
Pakistan will launch its first think tank on China.
The organization, called the Pakistan China Institute, will be formally
inaugurated on Oct. 1, which happens to be the 60th founding anniversary of new
China. It is aimed to promote, strengthen and expand Pakistan-China relations in
different fields, with equal number of experts, scholars and intellectuals from
China and Pakistan. It will have a function at the International Islamic
University, Islamabad.
DPRK top leader meets Chinese presidential envoy
CAM:
Kim Jong Il, top leader of the Democratic People's
Republic of Korea (DPRK), met in Pyongyang Friday with Chinese President Hu
Jintao's special envoy Dai Bingguo. In a letter delivered by Dai to Kim,
President Hu said the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government have
attached great importance to the relationship between China and the DPRK.
The Chinese president said it is China's consistent
goal to realize denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and to safeguard and
promote peace, stability and development of northeast Asia.
Sino-France ties
Intro:
Chinese ambassador to France Kong Quan says the
stability and development of China-France ties would benefit not only the two
countries but also the China-Europe relationship and the world as a whole. China
News has more.

Kong told China News Wednesday, it will be of
significant importance to retrospect on the bilateral ties this year as it marks
both the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and
the 45th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic ties between China
and France.

"In 1964 when China and France established the relationship, the bilateral trade
volume was only some 100 million U.S. dollars, that only roughly equaled to
their current daily trade volume."
He said the drastic increase in trade mirrored the
progress bilateral relations have made in the past 45 years.
In recent years China and France have extended their
cooperation to new fields as agricultural processing and energy saving besides
those traditional fields such as as nuclear energy, aerospace and
transportation.

"The French government has paid quite heavy attention to the forthcoming
Shanghai World Expo. By investing 50 million Euros (73.5 million U.S. dollars)
into building a national pavilion and several local exhibition halls. the French
seek to reflect its accomplishments of all fields so that the Chinese could have
a better understanding of France."

Kissinger Praises China
CAM:
Former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger Thursday
extended warm congratulations to China on its 60th founding anniversary.
Speaking at a grand reception sponsored by the Chinese Consulate-general in New
York, he said the New China's achievement was "extraordinary." Kissinger paid a
highly confidential visit to China in 1971, which paved the way for a
ground-breaking 1972 summit between China and the US. The visits eventually led
to the normalization of China-US relations on Jan. 1, 1979.
Founding anniversary celebrations
Intro:
In the lead-up to the 60th founding anniversary of
new China, various activities are being staged across the country. As China News
shows you, a singing gala is sheduled for Saturday in Shanghai.
Pkg:
More than 20,000 musicians and music lovers from
China and abroad will perform "Yellow River Cantata" Saturday for a singing gala
at Shanghai Jiangwan Stadium.
The singing gala is to commemorate the 70th
anniversary of the cantata composed by Xian Xinghai, a famous Chinese composer.
The performance attracted lots of chorus from abroad to participate.
Members of Schola Cantorum Chorus from Vienna hope
they sing this famous cantata in Chinese with musicians and music lovers from
China and abroad.
Sound bite: Quendler Margit, Deputy Head Choral of
the Schola Cantorum Chorus "We are very happy that we could celebrate with you,
and come to China. It is my first time for me and most of us. 14 people came
here, the oldest is 81 and the youngest is 21."
It is learnt that more than 400 professional and
amateur choral groups from China and abroad will gather at Shanghai Jiangwan
Stadium Saturday, perform "Yellow River Cantata" together for the gala.

The 5,460-kilometer-long Yellow River is known as
China's "mother river". "Yellow River Cantata" was composed in 1939, during the
War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.
"The Founding of a Republic"
Intro:
A film about the founding of the new China is
attracting large crowds of enthusiastic movie-goers. China News takes you to a
cinema in Changsha.
Pkg:
The highly-anticipated film "Jian Guo Da Ye", or "The
Founding of a Republic", made its debut yesterday in Changsha, capital city of
central China's Hunan province.
The film recounts Chinese history from 1945 to 1949,
and stars about 200 big-name mainland and Hong Kong actors.
SOUNDBITE: Xu Libin, Changsha citizen "First the
scene of war shocked me. Later in the film it showed the emotions and
personalities of the leaders and ordinary people, which are very touching."
At Changsha Wanda Cinema, the film had attracted 9
bookings by enterprises and more than 500 pre-sold tickets since September 14th.
SOUNDBITE: Peng Jiang, Changsha Wanda Cinema "We have
planned to show the film 14 times. But expecting more and more audiences
afterwards, we probably will increase the number of showings. We are very
confident about it."

China reviews first IPOs
Intro:
China's securities authority Thursday began reviewing
applications of the the first seven IPOs for listing on the Growth Enterprise
Market. China news has the details.
Pkg:
The seven enterprises covered fields of software,
medical equipment and medicine. They plan to raise 2.27 billion yuan (or 332.65
million U.S. dollars).
The meeting was open for the first time to
journalists, who were allowed to watch for about ten minutes.
According to a report on the website of the China
Securities Regulatory Commission, the second batch of IPOs are reviewed Friday.
They plan to raise 1.13 billion yuan (165.30 million U.S. dollars).

The CSRC started to accept applications to the GEM on
July 26, and had received 155 applications from IPOs as of Sept. 10.
R&D Center in Beijing
CAM:
Genzyme Corp., the world's third largest
biotechnology firm by revenue, has started construction of a 100 million U.S.
dollar research and development center in Beijing. The company aims to cash in
on the country's growing need for healthcare while also tapping into its talent
pool. The center covers about 200,000 square feet, and is scheduled to be
completed in 2011. It will carry out research in biology, pharmacology,
chemistry and other fields.
Taiwan trade fair
Intro:
The 2009 Taiwan Trade Fair is underway at the Nanjing
International Expo Center in east China's Jiangsu Province. China News takes you
there.
Pkg:
Sponsored by the Nanjing City Government and the
Taipei World Trade Center, the four-day fair opened Thursday.
Over 5,000 Chinese mainland buyers from 14 provinces
or cities have signed up to attend. About 750 Taiwanese exhibitors are
demonstrating their goods at nearly 1900 booths, showcasing some 30,000
products.
Lin Wenyi, vice chairman of the CPPCC, said in his
opening speech that the fair is an important platform for developing foreign
trade and attracting investment. She also said it could help deepen economic and
business cooperation across the Straits.
Wang Zhigang, CEO of the Taipei World Trade Center,
said Taiwanese enterprises should seize the opportunity to strengthen
cooperation with mainland counterparts.

Employment for Taiwan companies
Intro:
South China's Jiangxi Province are taking various
measures to facilitate employment in Taiwan enterprises in the province. China
News has more.
PKg:
Jiangxi has approved 2,415 Taiwan-funded projects
with a total investment of 13.84 billion U.S. dollars by the end of the first
half year.
In order to provide abundant labor force for the
increasing companies, the local government joined hands with Labor Employment
Department and Industrial Park to work out a series of resolutions. Hotlines and
information database for the Taiwan enterprises are established to help
recruitment.
Furthermore, the Jiangxi Taiwan Affairs Office also
established employees' training base in the areas where Taiwan entrepreneurs
live. And the workers can get professional training according to the companies'
demand.
Bank to expand in China
VO:
Standard Chartered Bank plans to increase its number
of dealers in China by about two-thirds in three to four years. It is now
seeking a bigger role in the country's rapidly-growing bond and foreign exchange
market. The British lender is also seeking regulatory approval to become a bond
market maker in China, as well as an underwriter of Chinese corporate debt. The
move comes amid the bank's other fund-raising plans. In June it unveiled plans
to raise up to 512.5 million U.S. dollars selling yuan-denominated bonds in
China.

More trees to eliminate UHI effect
Intro:
Southwestern China's Chongqing municipality is known
for its hot summer. Now the city is planning to plant more trees, with a view to
reducing heat. China News has more.
Pkg:
According to the plan, a total of 20,000 hectares of
forest will be planted in the coming 10 years. The purpose is to eliminate an
Urban Heat Island, or UHI effect around the city.
Moreover, local government will improve the mixture
proportion of coniferous trees and broad leaved trees to 1:1 in an effort to add
more oxygen to the city while cooling down the temperature.
According to experts, the extremely hot days with the
highest temperature above 40 degrees Celsius will not occur if the forest
coverage of the region reaches 45 percent.
A UHI effect means the temperature of an urban area
is higher than the surrounding area due to the modification of the land in the
urban development.
China plants trees
VO:
Not only Chongqing. In other parts of China, people
are also planting trees to tackle climate change. A forestry administration
official said Thursday that the country has afforested more than 66,000 hectares
of land, using money from the China Green Carbon Fund. The fund was established
in July 2007 as a countermeasure to address Climate change. Forests absorb
carbon dioxide, the major contributor to global warming, and release oxygen.
New Science and Technology Museum
Intro:
China's New Science and Technology Museum will be
open to the public Sunday. Until then, a lot of facilities with the latest
technologies will be available to visitors. China News reporter Zhang Danni has
gone there before its opening. Let's take a look.

Situated at the northeast part of Olympic Green, the
new site of the China Science and Technology Museum is near the iconic Bird’s
Nest and Water Cube.
The new Science and Technology Museum has five halls
with different themes, that includes one for science lovers to play interactive
games, one that introduces ancient Chinese inventions, one featuring new
frontier discoveries, one featuring science in daily life, and one focuses on
the future.

sitting behind me is Russian greatest chemist Ivanovich Mendeleev. He formulated
the periodic table of elements in 1869. A lot of Chinese students must have
known him from the book. Today, visitors could ask Mendeleev questions
themselves through this voice-identified microphone in the new hall of China
Science and Technology Museum.”
As you push the button and say the designated
question to the microphone, Mendeleev could answer your question.

The museum is also equipped with laboratories,
classrooms and platforms introducing popular science.

The museum's predecessor, the first of its kind in
China, was opened in 1988 and attracted more than 20 million visitors before it
was closed last June.
Shanghai Expo pushes solar energy
Intro:
Some buildings at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo are
drawing attention for their application of solar energy. China News has the
story.
Pkg:
The installation of Building-Integrated Photovoltaic,
or BIPV, projects at the China Pavilion and the World Expo Theme Center have
been completed and are now being tested.
Covering an area of 28.8 thousand square meters and
with a total capacity of more than 3100 kilowatts, the two pavilions can provide
electricity for 2500 Shanghai families per year.
SOUNDBITE(Chinese): Zhao Guojing, Shenergy "There are
two advantages to solar photovoltaic: it's clean technology and consumes no raw
materials besides the production of the solar module. Thus, during the
electricity generation process, our project can last for at least 20 to 25
years, as long as the building remains."
With a production capability of up to 40 percent of
the world's total, China already ranks among the most advanced in production of
solar photovoltaic modules in the world.
However, there is still a gap between China and
developed countries in photovoltaic application.

percent of China's solar energy module production is exported. We hope the
pioneer application of solar energy at the expo site will serve as a model for
Shanghai and China, and even the world."

Additional pavilions are scheduled to utilize solar
energy at the Expo. When their construction is completed, the total generating
capacity could reach 4.5 Megawatts.
Pole vault queen named ambassador
Intro:
Russia has named its promotion ambassador for the
Shanghai World Expo. As China News shows you, she is well known as the country's
"Pole Vault Queen".

Russian pole-vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva was appointed
Thursday as a Russian Promotion Ambassador for the Shanghai World Expo 2010.
As a two-time Olympic gold medalist and 27-time
female pole vault world record setter, Isinbayeva is among the world's
best-known athletes. Dubbed the "Queen of Pole Vault" for her superb
performances, Isinbayeva says she is delighted to do her part to enhance
Sino-Russian relations.

"I will try to promote more people and suggest them to come to Shanghai to see
this expo. Because I think it's going to be very interesting. My role is just to
try to explain more what is going to be here and you know just try to invite

Isinbayeva is currently in Shanghai to compete at the
2009 Shanghai Golden Grand Prix. She expressed her confidence and high
expectations for the event.

The expo is scheduled to run from May 1 to October 31
next year. About 70 million visitors are expected, among whom 3.5 million will
be from overseas. A total of 7.25 million tickets have already been sold.
Liu Xiang to run at Golden Grand Prix
VO:
Also about the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix. After a
13-month layoff due to injury, former Olympic champion Liu Xiang is to make a
run at the Golden Grand Prix the coming Sunday. Liu Xiang won the 110m hurdles
title at the Athens Olympic Games, but withdrew from the heat of the event at
the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The 26-year-old hurdler was also the 2007 world
champion in men's 110 meters hurdles. He just returned to training in July after
a surgery on his right Achilles tendon last December. Liu and coach Sun Haiping
both hope the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix will help Liu improve as he prepares
for the Asian Athletics Championships in November and the East Asian Games in
December.
Puppy love "in the doghouse"
Intro:
Too young to fall in love? Heilongjiang has become
the first province in China to list "puppy love" between teenagers as
"misconduct". As China News shows you, this has sparked wide controversy since
its introduction about a month ago.
Pkg:
The northeastern province adopted the Regulation for
the Protection of Minors on August 20. The regulation lists puppy love as
"misconduct", and suggests parents put a stop to it.
The controversial regulation will become effective
from Oct. 1. But heated discussions have already flared up across media and
websites nationwide.
Some say lawmakers in the province are overconfident,
while others are skeptical of how effective the regulation will be implemented.
Soundbite: Jiali, Student I think the regulation is
making a mountain out of a molehill. Parents and their children should have good
communication, but the regulation puts them into two opposing camps.
Soundbite: Student We are against the regulation.
It's easy to make us rebellious.
Soundbite: Student I'm in junior high. I think there
is no puppy love between boys and girls. It's just friendship.
Soundbite: Parent Friendship is ok, but we will not
tolerate puppy love.
Soundbite: Parent It's important for the parents to
discipline their kids.
(Graphics)China Youth Daily quoted one netizen as
saying, "Love for the opposite sex is a natural part of life as one grows up. I
believe it is not a bad thing after all."
But many teachers say the regulation is the right
thing to do.
Soundbite: Teacher I believe puppy love is a problem.
I think it's ok to include it in a regulation.
Soundbite: Teacher I'm all for this regulation. I
think it would benefit the students in the long run.
Wu Wenbin, an official with the People's Congress in
Heilongjiang, said some people had an incomplete understanding of the
regulation.
Wu said (Graphics) "The regulation does not directly
ban puppy love. It stresses the responsibility of parents and guardians."
