BAQUBA, Iraq, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- An Iraqi army officer was killed while 11 people wounded in a series of attacks in Iraq's volatile province of Diyala northeast of Baghdad on Sunday, a provincial police source said.

    The officer was shot dead by gunmen in military uniform at the town of Jalawlaa, 120 km northeast of Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

    In separate incident, a roadside bomb went off near an army patrol at the town of Sa'adiyah, some 110 km northeast of Baghdad ,wounding three officers and two soldiers, the source said.

    Also in the day, a policeman and a civilian were wounded when gunmen attacked a police checkpoint at the town of Maqdadiyah, 100km northeast of Baghdad, the source added.

    In Baquba, the capital city of Diyala province, two policemen were wounded in two attacks by unknown gunmen in the city during the day, while outside Baquba, a woman and a four-year-old child were wounded in land mine explosion in a farm at a rural area.

    Sunday's attacks came as Iraqi Muslims are celebrating the first day of the Muslim feast of Eid al-Fitr, lasting from Sunday to Tuesday, which marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

    Diyala province, which stretches from the eastern edges of Baghdad to the Iranian border east of the country, has long been a stronghold for al-Qaida militants and other insurgent groups since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, despite repeated U.S. and Iraqi military operations against them.
