Somali gov't condemns twin suicide attacks in Mogadishu 2009-09-18 18:03:17   Print

MOGADISHU, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Somali transitional government has strongly condemned as "acts of terror" Thursday's double suicide car bomb attacks on African Union (AU) peacekeepers' headquarters and Somali government forces in Mogadishu, a government statement said.

The statement said, "the Somali Prime Ministers, Omar Abdurashid Ali Sharmarke, strongly condemns the acts of terror that targeted the headquarters of the African Union mission in Somalia (AMISOM) peacekeeping forces."

The statement obtained by Xinhua said the attacks caused casualties without giving details. The Somali prime minister sent his condolences to the families of those killed and wounded in the attack.

Two suicide cars carrying bombs with UN logo on Thursday managed to enter the headquarters of AMISOM forces where the bombs went off.

The Somali government said in the statement the vehicles that were used in the attacks were stolen from UN offices in Somalia.

The Somali Islamist group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack saying it caused heavy losses to AU peacekeepers and Somali government forces in the area.

An ensuing heavy shelling on rebel positions targeted Mogadishu' s main Bakara market following the suicide attack, killing seven civilians.

The Somali government appealed to the international community to support "morally and materially" both the Somali government and the AU peacekeeping forces in Mogadishu, so that the Somali people can defend against the perpetrators of the acts of terror, the statement said.

The Somali government said investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and the extent of damage it caused.

African Union Special Representative for Somalia Nicolas Bwakira also condemned "in the strongest terms" the attack on AMISOM Force Headquarters in Mogadishu.

The AU promised it will remain resolute in its commitment to support the Somali people and the transitional federal government in their peace and reconciliation efforts despite what it said was "a barbaric attack."
