BERLIN, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- A man attacked a high school in southern Germany city of Ansbach on Thursday morning, leaving nine students injured, local police said.

The attacker was arrested after police were called to the Carolinum high school near Nuremberg. Police said none of the injuries are life-threatening, but one child was seriously hurt.

Local media reported that the 19-year-old attacker stormed the high school with an axe and Molotov cocktail.

The attacker himself was also injured, and local police have evacuated the school.

"The attacker has been arrested, is injured and is on the way to hospital," said Nuremberg police spokesman Peter Grimm.

"The whole school has been cleared. There is no sign of a second attacker," he added.

Police said in a statement that the attacker entered the school at 8:35 am local time (0635 GMT) and was overpowered 10 minutes later.

The attack has aroused widespread attention within local media as last Saturday's murder of a businessman in Munich shocked Germans.

On Sept. 12, two youths beat a 50-year-old businessman to death at a Munich train station as he tried to defend a group of children. The crime has ignited nationwide anger and condolence.

German politicians are calling for tighter youth laws and increased video surveillance, even some are threatening to prosecute passersby who do not act to stop such crimes.
