TAIPEI, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Several polls indicated
Taiwan residents approved of sentences on former Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian.
A poll conducted by local TV channel TVBS showed that 50 percent of respondents thought the life-imprisonment sentences on Chen and his wife were not too harsh, only 29 percent said they were too harsh.

According to the poll, 49 percent respondents said
the sentences were not politically motivated, only 30 percent said they were.
In another survey, conducted by the newspaper China
Times, 39 percent respondents said the sentences were proper, 13 percent said
they were too lenient while only 24 percent said they were too harsh.
Chen has said he would appeal against the corruption
conviction handed down by the Taipei District Court last Friday, according to
local media reports.
But Chen has not decided whether he will defend
himself at the court during the second trial, according to the reports.
Chen was sentenced to life imprisonment by the court
Friday afternoon after being convicted of embezzlement, money laundering,
bribery and document falsification, and fined 200 million New Taiwan dollars
(six million U.S. dollars).
Chen's wife Wu Shu-chen had previously been sentenced
to life imprisonment by the court.

TAIPEI, July 24 (Xinhua) -- The Taipei district court
plans to deliver a verdict on former Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian's corruption
case at around 4 p.m. Sept. 11 this year, sources with the court said Friday.
Tsai Shou-hsum, the presiding judge in Chen's
corruption case, made the announcement after a trial on a land purchase deal in
connection with the former leader, saying trial of Chen's cases was "drawing to

TAIPEI, July 13 (Xinhua) -- The Taipei court on Monday
ordered that former Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian, who is on trial for
corruption, will be detained for a further two months while his case
continues.
Chen was first indicted on Dec. 12 for money
laundering and bribery. He and his wife were charged with embezzling 104 million
New Taiwan dollars (3.15 million U.S. dollars) in public funds and accepting
bribes of at least 9 million U.S. dollars in a land purchase deal.

TAIPEI, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Former Taiwan leader Chen
Shui-bian has been indicted on new corruption charges, prosecutors said here
Tuesday.
While in office, Chen and his wife Wu Shu-chen took 10
million New Taiwan dollars (302,000 U.S. dollars) in bribes from a local
businesswoman, and demanded bribes and donations totaling 300 million New Taiwan
dollars from a former banker, prosecutors said at a press conference. Full story
Chen Shui-bian banned from DPP for
next five years
Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) said
Monday former Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian had been expelled from the party and
would not be allowed to apply to join again in the next five years, as a result
of Friday's first trial verdict finding him guilty of corruption, local media
reported.
Chen was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Taipei
District Court on charges of embezzlement, money laundering, bribery and
document falsification, and was also fined 200 million New Taiwan dollars (6
