MANILA, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- Employees of the Philippine Airlines (PAL), the country's flagship carrier, will stage a rally on Monday to protest a corporate overhaul that is expected to cut or transfer 2,000 jobs in order to save the ailing airline.
Gerry Rivera, PAL Employees Association president and vice chairman of the labor party-list group Partido ng Manggagawa (PM or Workers Party), said the rally is intended to show the union's anger over the company management's "predilection of throwing the weight of his corporate problems to the workers," local media reported Sunday.
But the report did not say how many are expected to join the rally and if the airline operations will be affected.
PAL, once a thriving airline, is reviewing its entire organizational set-up and is reportedly to cut 2,000 jobs by the end of the year after it incurred heavy losses in the global economic downturn, the on-line news network INQUIRER.Net said.
A company statement said that as of end-March this year, the airline posted 301.4 million U.S. dollars in losses.
