MEXICO CITY, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Mexican scholars and government officials
called for more use of clean energy at an environmental seminar on Friday.
Nobel Prize winner Mario Molina said one way to resolve environmental
crisis was to abandon the past development model and use more clean energy.
The world could switch to clean energy sources at a cost of 1 to 3 percent
of gross domestic product, and the cost of inaction would be far higher, Molina
said.
Adrian Fernandez Bremauntz, director of Mexico's National Ecology Agency,
said Mexico should build more efficient societies which used energy in a
sustainable manner.
Wind power was already producing competitive energy, he said, adding that
and the relative cheaper price of fossil fuels was based on short-term
calculations which did not include the price of environmental damage.
The experts also said that some Mexicans are using excessive amounts of
energy to live comfortably, while nearly 5 percent of the population had no
access to electricity.
Climate change is currently the biggest environmental worry. Greenhouse
gases, including carbon dioxide, emitted by burning fossil fuels, trap heat and
cause climate change.
