RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian health authorities confirmed eight more deaths of A/H1N1 flu on Tuesday, raising the country's death toll to 511.

So far, Sao Paulo state has registered the highest death toll with 179 victims, followed by southern Parana state with 154 and Rio Grande do Sul with 94.

According to the World Health Organization, about 20 percent of the world's A/H1N1 flu death cases occurred in Brazil.

The sharp increase in the death toll since last week made Brazil surpass Argentina to have the second highest death toll in the world, only after the United States.

There were 5,767 confirmed cases of A/H1N1 flu in Brazil, about half of them being serious, according to the Health Ministry's latest report.
