China's legislature updates laws

    BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature Thursday agreed a legislation overhaul with the updating and revision of 141 provisions in 59 different laws.

    Most amendments focused on deleting outdated terms or clarifying them, as well as making certain provisions consistent with revised laws.

China passes armed police law

    BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature Thursday passed the country's first law on armed police, giving them new duties with a statutory authorization to respond to riots, terrorist attacks and other social security emergencies.

Chinese legislature endorses climate change resolution  

    BEIJING, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature approved Thursday afternoon a resolution on climate change, ahead of an international conference in December in Copenhagen, Denmark.

China stresses economic restructuring in promoting growth

    BEIJING, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- China needs to stress economic restructuring while aiming at a higher growth, according to a report submitted Tuesday to the country's law makers.

    The report was delivered by Zhang Ping, minister in charge of the National Development and Reform Commission, the top economic planning agency, to the 10th session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislature.

Lawmakers warn of epidemic animal disease threats in China


    BEIJING, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese lawmakers warned Tuesday of a "grave hidden peril" of epidemic animal disease because of inadequate monitoring facilities and a complex international environment.

    Even though the government has set up a compulsory vaccination system, requiring immunization of animals against diseases harmful to people's health and the husbandry industry, the possibility of outbreaks of disease still existed, the lawmakers said in a report presented at the 10th session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC).

China's top legislature considers draft resolution on climate change


    BEIJING, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature began Tuesday deliberating a draft resolution on climate change, which aims to accelerate efforts to tackle the challenge of global warming.

    The draft, submitted to the 10th session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), says China "as a developing country" will firmly "maintain the right to development, and opposes "any form of trade protectionism disguised as tackling climate change." Full story

China's top legislature reviews draft law on government powers


    BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature considered for the third time a draft law regulating government mandatory power on Monday, the first of its kind to prevent abuses of administrative power.

    The draft administrative mandatory power law was submitted to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislature, for a third reading.  Full story

    BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- A draft law relating to the operations of armed police, submitted for the second reading by Chinese lawmakers Monday, has been revised to include a clearer definition of their duties and a tightening of restrictions of their powers.

    The draft revision was tabled at the 10th session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislature, which opened its latest four-day, bi-monthly session Monday.  Full story  

China's top legislature starts bimonthly session, considers draft amendment to renewable energy law

    BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature started its bimonthly session Monday morning, with the focus on a draft amendment to the renewable energy law and the country's efforts in tackling climate change.

    The 10th meeting of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislature, scheduled from Aug. 24 to 27, will also deliberate a State Council (Cabinet) work report on the work of tackling climate change on Monday.  Full story 

China considering renewable energy development fund

    BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese lawmakers are considering a government fund for renewable energy development, in a move to support the industry and strengthen governmental macro-economic regulation.

    Under the current Renewable Energy Law (2005), the State set up a special fund for renewable energy development. If the draft amendment is approved, a new fund with two sources of income will be set up -- one from the special fund and one from the income deriving from surcharges on renewable energy electricity prices.  Full story
