KABUL, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Taliban militants gunned down a candidate for provincial councils in Afghanistan's northern Jauzjan province, provincial police chief Abdul Khalil Aminzada said Tuesday.

"Two Taliban insurgents riding a motorbike opened fire on the car of Mullah Abdul Rahim on the way between Aqcha and Mordian district Monday afternoon killing him on the spot," Aminzada told Xinhua.

As a candidate for provincial council in Jauzjan province, Mullah Abdul Rahim just ended his election campaign and was going home when the insurgents shot him dead.

Monday was the last day of two-month campaigning for Afghan presidential and provincial councils' election.

Taliban militants have vowed to disrupt the Aug. 20 election held amid tight security in the post-Taliban Afghanistan.
