Aid arrives as Taiwan still feels devastation

    SHENZHEN, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland on Sunday delivered a final consignment of 400 prefabricated houses to Taiwan to aid Typhoon Morakot relief efforts. The consignment follows the delivery of an earlier 600.

    The houses were shipped from Shenzhen in China's southern Guangdong Province and will arrive in Taiwan's Kaohsiung port on Monday. Full story

     BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Another seven Chinese mainland technicians left for Taiwan on Monday to help install prefabricated houses on the typhoon-hit island.

    The first batch of three technicians started working on the island after they arrived Saturday night. But the work was still short-handed, and Taiwan authorities granted permission to send other mainland technicians as soon as possible.Full story

    BEIJING/TAIPEI, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan has started building homes for hundreds of homeless families left by Typhoon Morakot with assistance from the mainland.

    Prefabricated houses with blue roof and white walls, donated by the Chinese mainland, are being set up in Pingtung County in the south of the island.

    BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- As Taiwan was hit by the most devastating typhoon in half a century, the Communist Party of China (CPC) top leader Hu Jintao said Wednesday that the mainland shared "the same feeling" with Taiwan people.

    "We share the same feeling with Taiwan compatriots, especially the ethnic minorities, who suffered serious life and property loss in the recent disaster. We are very much concerned," said Hu, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee. Full story

    BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese mainland authorities have promised ethnic minority groups in Taiwan preferential assistance in trade, tourism and other sectors to promote the island's economic and social development after the devastating Typhoon Morakot.

    Minister of Commerce Chen Deming said in meeting a Taiwan delegation led by politician Kao Chin Su-mei on Thursday that the ministry would lead mainland entrepreneurs to visit the island's areas inhabited by ethnic minorities to purchase local products.   Full story

Mainland fundraiser raises 310 mln yuan for Taiwan typhoon victims

    BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- A star-studded television fundraiser on the Chinese mainland raised more than 310 million yuan (about 45 million U.S. dollars) for victims of Taiwan's deadliest typhoon in half a century.

    The more-than-four-hour fundraiser featured entertainment and sport stars from across the Taiwan Strait, such as actress Zhou Xun, sport star Lin Dan and singer Chyi Chin. Full story

    BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Relief funds and materials donated by the Chinese mainland to typhoon Morakot-stricken Taiwan totaled 300 million yuan (44 million U.S. dollars) by Wednesday night, said Yang Yi, a spokesman of the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office Thursday.

    The donation included 270 million yuan in money and 30 million yuan worth of relief materials, Yang said.Full story

    SHANGHAI, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Five satellite TV stations on the Chinese mainland will hold a charity telethon to raise funds for Taiwan victims of Typhoon Morakot on Thursday night, a TV source said Wednesday.

    Shanghai-based Dragon TV said it will jointly broadcast the live charity event in its Beijing studio at 7:35 p.m. with Jiangsu Satellite TV, Zhejiang Satellite TV, Hunan Satellite TV and Shenzhen Satellite TV.Full story

    TAIPEI, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Seven more victims of typhoon Morakot were confirmed in Taiwan, raising the death toll to 141 as of 12 p.m. Thursday, local disaster response authorities said.

     BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese mainland has donated about 176 million yuan (26 million U.S. dollars) and disaster relief materials worth 25 million yuan to typhoon Morakot hit Taiwan, said Fan Liqing, a spokeswoman with the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office at a news conference Wednesday.     SHENZHEN, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- The first batch of 100 prefabricated houses donated by Shenzhen, a booming city in south China, left Yantian Port Monday evening for Taiwan's Kaohsiung port.

    Shenzhen City government decided to donate 1,000 prefabricated houses, which cover more than 50,000 square meters with a worth of nearly 20 million yuan (2.9 million U.S. dollars). Full story

    BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Five TV stations in the Chinese mainland are organizing a televised fundraiser on the coming Thursday to raise money for victims of Taiwan's deadliest typhoon in half a century.

    A number of the country's biggest names in the entertainment industry will be invited, such as directors Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige and Feng Xiaogang, actors Jackie Chan and Jet Li, actresses Zhang Ziyi and Zhou Xun, as well as sports stars Yao Ming and Guo JingJing.  Full story

Chinese Americans start relief campaign to help typhoon victims in Taiwan

    LOS ANGELES, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Americans in Southern California, in disregard of their origins and political preferences, have started a relief campaign in the communities they live to help victims hit by the worst typhoon in Taiwan in half a century.

   It is reported that Typhoon Morakot had killed at least 117 people as of 10 a.m. Friday, but Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou said Friday the death toll could reach 500 with about 380 more victims in Kaohsiung's Hsiaolin village.Full story

    BEIJING, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- The One Foundation Project, initiated by Chinese kung fu star Jet Li, has allocated 300,000 yuan (about 43,800 U.S. dollars) to Taiwan for typhoon relief, the foundation said here Sunday.

    Jet Li himself flew to the typhoon-battered areas in southern Taiwan on Aug. 14 to comfort survivors and help with disaster relief, said Zhou Weiyan, executive chair of the foundation. Full story
