BEIJING, Aug. 10 -- A Kenyan man over the
weekend reiterated his offer of a 20-cow and 40-goat dowry to woo Chelsea
Clinton, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's daughter, nine years after he
wrote to then-president Bill Clinton with the proposal.
Godwin Kipkemoi Chepkurgor, 39, a former city
councilor in Nakuru, a city in southern Kenya, told the East African Standard
newspaper that he wrote to Bill Clinton asking for Chelsea's hand in 2000, when
the Clintons visited Kenya, and he hadn't received a response.
Hillary Clinton's visit to the capital Nairobi last
week was seen as another opportunity by Chepkurgor to express his love.
Clinton was asked about the proposal by a CNN
reporter at a Nairobi Town Hall session Thursday. "If you think about the
current global economic climate, in which asset value has gone down...it's not a
bad offer," the reporter said.
Though the audience laughed, Clinton's response was
humorless,"She (Chelsea) is very independent, so I will convey this very kind
offer."
Chepkurgor told the East African Standard that he was
elated by the response, "I express joy and happiness that, after a long time,
the Clinton family has responded," adding that he had been waiting for more than
eight years for a response.
According to CNN, since polygamy is legal in Kenya,
Chelsea could only be Chepkurgor's second wife if she accepts, because he
already married in 2006.
