JAKARTA, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter
scale rocked eastern part of Indonesia on Sunday morning, but there was no
report of damage or casualties, said the local meteorology and geophysics
agency.
The quake struck at 08:07 Jakarta time (0107 GMT) with epicenter at 161 km
northwest Saumlaki of Maluku province and 10 km in depth, the agency said.
Indonesia with over 230 million population is laid on
a vulnerable quake-hit zone, the so called "Pacific Ring of Fire", where two
continental plates stretching from Western hemisphere to Japan meet, that often
triggers seismic and volcanic movements.
