BEIJING, July 28 (Xinhuanet) -- A small pistol once
belonging to John Dillinger, one of the most infamous bank robbers in the United
States in the early 1930s, has brought 95,600 U.S. dollars at a Texas
auction, media reports said Monday.
Heritage Auction Galleries in Dallas reports the
winning bid for the Remington .41-caliber double derringer was more than double
the pre-auction estimate. The gun sold Saturday to a collector from the Los
Angeles area .
The pistol was said to have been found hidden in one
of Dillinger's socks when he was arrested in Tucson, Arizona in January 1934.
Dillinger was killed six months later, on July 22,
1934, by federal agents outside the Biograph Theater in Chicago.
Dillinger's story has inspired at least five movies
or TV films including the most recent release "Public Enemies" in which
Dillinger is portrayed by actor Johnny Depp.
