HONG KONG, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Three fatalities related to H1N1 infection were reported in China's Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore Monday, raising fresh awareness about the deadliness of the disease.
A 37-year-old woman Filipino patient who was confirmed to have infected with Influenza A/H1N1 passed away on Monday, said the Center for Health Protection of Hong Kong.
This was the second fatal case related to Influenza A/H1N1 after the first case involving a 42-year-old Philippine seaman was reported on July 16.
The woman arrived in Hong Kong on June 28 and developed fever, sore throat, running nose and diarrhea on June 29. She was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of United Christian Hospital on July 7 in critical condition.
The case has been referred to the Coroner by the hospital for investigation. The Center for Health Protection will report the case to the World Health Organization.
Hong Kong confirmed 153 new cases of influenza A/H1N1 on Monday, bringing the total to 2,855, said the center.
Singapore reported on Monday the fifth case of A/H1N1 related death, according to the country's Health Ministry.
According to the ministry, the case is a 34-year-old Chinese female with acute myeloid leukemia. She was admitted to local hospital on July 17 after two days of cough. She was transferred to the intensive care unit on July 19 because of low oxygen saturation. She passed away on Monday morning and the cause of death is pneumonia, with Influenza A/H1N1 infection as a contributing factor.
Singapore reported its first confirmed case of Influenza A/H1N1on May 27. The country's first case of fatality was reported on July 18 when a 49-year-old man with severe heart disease and multiple health problems died from a heart attack with A/H1N1 infection.
A man died of A/H1N1 flu on Sunday in a private hospital in Subang Jaya in the Selangor state near here, the second death related to the epidemic, Malaysia's national news agency Bernama reported on Monday.
The man, who has been treated in the hospital since July 16, died at 12:35 p.m. on Sunday, Bernama said.
The country reported the first death related to A/H1N1 flu on July 23 when a 30-year-old Indonesian student, who was a confirmed patient of the flu, died from cardiac disease.
The Malaysian Health Ministry reported 49 new cases of A/H1N1 flu on Monday, who were all locally transmitted cases.
The ministry said Malaysia has 1,124 A/H1N1 flu cases, with 574imported ones and 550 locally transmitted ones.
Indonesia confirmed 16 people newly infected by H1N1 virus, bringing the total cases to 416, a director at the Health Ministry said here Monday in a statement.
Director General of Disease Control and Environmental Health of the ministry Tjandra Yoga Aditama said that one of the newly infected Indonesian citizens had a journey to China's Hong Kong.
"So far the cumulative number of infected persons, comprising 237 males and 179 females," he said.
