Rainstorms cause 6 dead, 12 injured in northwest China

    BEIJING, July 24 -- A lingering rainstorm has left 6 people dead, 12 injured in Longnan City, northwest China's Gansu province, Xinhua learned Thursday.

    The four-day downpour started to hit Longnan city from July 14, and the heavy rainstorms killed 6, injured 12 and tore down more than 2,800 houses.

    Infrastructure of power and water supply, telecommunication network were seriously affected, resulting in a total loss of 175 million yuan (26 million U.S. dollars).

    The heavy rainstorms snapped Longnan's 220KV electric network and a 35KV transformer substation, as well as more than 1600 under-10KV power lines, affecting roughly 105,000 residents totally.

    As of Wednesday afternoon, 8 counties in Longnan city except Kang county, had resumed power supply for 80,000 rural residents after the torrential rains and floods, official from Gansu Electric Company told Xinhua.

    Soundbite: Zhang Jianwei, deputy manager of Gansu Electric Power Corporation "To date 8 counties except Kang county have all resumed power supply. Now 22 10KV power lines are being revamped in Kang county."

    It is learned the revamping would possibly wrap up in the early August.
