BEIJING, July 23 -- Not used to the unpredictable
winds and the mountainous landscapes, about a hundred kite enthusiasts came from
all over Europe to fly their kites on a Swiss mountain.
The kite enthusiasts needed a cable car to reach the
Cret-du-Midi, at 2,332 meters above sea level. They traveled from several
European countries for the weekend festival.
Bernard Clerc, President of Swiss Kite Festival said,
"I've got Danish people, people who've come from Belgium, from England, who have
come here to see this landscape for themselves. And it's true that it's very
hard to fly in a place like this. It's also a challenge for them."
Obliged to make their own kites, the participants
brought them in all different shapes and sizes - many of them representing
animals.
Kite flyer Wolfgang Karrer said, "It is very
difficult to fly a kite here, because there is not much space. There is a wind
that passes through the valley. You have to imagine the wind is like turbulent
waters. The more twists and turns, the more difficult it is."
Despite the difficult conditions, some enthusiasts
managed to fly not just one kite, but several at the same time.
A local club, Element Air, organizes the festival
every year. This was its 14th year.
