BEIJING, July 22 -- The Taipei World Trade Center has agreed to
participate in the World Expo 2010.
According to an agreement signed with the Expo's
organizing committee on Tuesday, the Taipei World Trade The center will build
the Taiwan Pavilion in Shanghai.
The main structure of the pavilion will be a
transparent "sky lantern", which houses an LED ball -- a theater.
The pavilion, featuring the theme of mountain, water,
nature, soul and city, is designed to showcase Taiwan's beautiful scenery, as
well as its achievements in science and technology, environmental protection,
culture and arts.
SOUNDBITE: Li Zuyuan, architecture designer of the
Taiwan Pavilion "Taiwan takes pride in its natural scenery such as mountains and
waters, as well Taiwan people's aspiration of inheriting the Chinese culture,
which has a history of thousands of years. Therefore we aim to show our
combination of 'natural city' and 'soul life'. The reason why we select 'sky
lantern' for the main structure is that releasing 'sky lanterns' in Taiwan is
considered good luck, and Taiwan people believe they are symbolic of problems
and worries floating away."
