BEIJING, July 18 -- Family Guy has become the first animated programme to be nominated for the outstanding comedy series Emmy Award in 48 years.

    According to E!, The Flintstones was recognised in the category - then known as outstanding programme achievement in the field of humour - in 1961.

    The Simpsons has won a total of 13 Emmy Awards, though for categories including outstanding animated programme.

    It was recently reported that Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane said that he wanted the series to be the first animated show to win the comedy Emmy.

    The 61st annual Emmy Awards will be broadcast on September 20.
