SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Member states of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) called to the U.S. government to put an end to its embargo against Cuba which is causing economic damage to the Cuban people, a statement issued by NAM summit secretariat said Monday.
The statement said the economic, commercial and financial embargo against Cuba, which runs counter to the UN Charter and international law, is causing huge human suffering, material losses and economic damage that have negatively impacted on the welfare of the people of Cuba.
The NAM further urged the U.S. government to immediately fully comply with all the UN resolutions to end the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States against Cuba, it added.
Cuba, an island country in the Caribbean Sea, has a first-hand experience in deeply feeling the strike of the policies and actions, as it has been embargoed in economic, commercial and financial fields by the United States during the past five decades. Some 70 percent of Cubans have been born under the embargo.
Founded in September 1961, NAM now groups 118 member states, 16observer countries and 9 observer organizations. The movement, which represents nearly two-thirds of UN member countries and comprises 55 percent of the world population, focuses on striving for interests of developing countries all over the world.
