Asia-Pacific region reports two more death cases related to A/H1N1 flu

    HONG KONG, July 11 (Xinhua)-- Thailand and New Zealand on Saturday reported one more death case from A/H1N1 flu each, while new infected cases were confirmed in other parts of the Asia-Pacific region.

    Thailand on Saturday reported one more death related to influenza A/H1N1, bringing the country's death toll to 16.

    The latest victim was a 45-year-old man from Ayutthaya province, some 50 km north to the capital of Bangkok, Rattanachai Jullaneth, chief of Ayutthaya public health office said.

    The patient was admitted to Ayutthaya hospital last Wednesday. He, already in critical condition, suffered from a complication of pneumonia and kidney failure.

    A team of doctors tried to save his life by giving him the antiviral drug oseltamivir and washing his kidney, but they had failed, he said.

    On the same day, Thailand also confirmed 157 more infected cases, bringing the country's total number to 3,228.

    Of those patients, most have recovered, 15 people died, some six people are in serious condition, health ministry sources said.

    New Zealand also reported one more death case related to A/H1N1on Saturday, bring the total death toll to seven.

    The latest death involved a man from east North Island's Taranaki region, who had tested positive for the new strain of fluvirus and died last week.

    Doctors said he had also suffered "underlying medical condition."

    The cumulative cases have reached 1,555 in New Zealand so far.

    Hong Kong has confirmed 58 new cases of influenza A/H1N1 in the past 24 hours as of 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, taking the total to 1,236 in the city, according to local health authorities.

    A spokesman for the Department of Health of Hong Kong Saturday said the new cases involved 26 males and 32 females, aged between 2 and 55 years old.
