RIO DE JANEIRO, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's Health Ministry said Friday that 54 new H1N1 flu cases have been confirmed, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 1,027.
The ministry also announced the second death from H1N1 flu in the country, an 11-year-old girl from the town of Osasco, in southeastern Sao Paulo state.
According to the ministry, the child died on June 30 in a private hospital, two days after showing the initial symptoms: abdominal pain, vomiting and fever.
The girl's seven-year-old brother also started showing symptoms during the funeral. The brother, as well as the girl¡¯s parents, was diagnosed with H1N1 flu. Only the father remains at the hospital.
Another child, who is reportedly a friend of the girl' brother, also caught the H1N1 flu, and is being treated.
Neither the girl nor her family travelled abroad, and there is no evidence so far that they had any sort of contact with people infected in international trips. The Health Ministry had claimed that all domestic transmission cases resulted from contact with patients infected in other countries.
The first H1N1 death in Brazil occurred in June. The patient was a 29-year-old truck driver from Rio Grande do Sul state, who was infected during a trip to Argentina.
