URUMQI, July 10 (Xinhua) -- The families of innocent
civilians killed in Sunday's riot in western China will receive 200,000 yuan
(29,282 U.S. dollars) for each death, an official said Friday.
Wang Fengyun, director of the Urumqi Civil Affairs
Bureau, said at a press conference that the compensation payment method for
innocent citizens killed or disabled in the violence would be announced soon.
The municipal government of Urumqi, capital of
Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, would also provide a funeral subsidy of 10,000
yuan for each death in the riot in the city.
In addition, the city government would also offer an
interim benefit of 10,000 yuan for each death, she said.
The bureau had already distributed 320,000 yuan of
such benefits to the families of the victims, said Wang.
The city's fiscal department has prepared 50 million
yuan to comfort and compensate the bereaved families.
Wang said the city police were using DNA technology
to identify the dead and would conduct investigations to determine whether they
had been innocent victims in the riot.
At least 156 people died and more than 1,000 were
wounded in the riot.
