TEHRAN, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of protestors on Thursday gathered around Iran's Tehran University and staged a march along nearby streets despite government warnings.

Most of the protestors gathered in front of the university were young men and women, and they were chanting "death to the dictator," witness said on condition of anonymity.

There were also hundreds of protestors gathered in the nearby Revolution Street and Vali-Asr Street, the witness said, adding that police were wielding batons and using tear gas to disperse them.

The official IRNA news agency reported late Wednesday that Tehran Governor Morteza Tamaddon warned against any protest on Thursday.

"If any individuals plan to carry out anti-security actions under the influence of anti-revolutionary networks, they will be smashed under the feet of our alert people," he said.

Thursday is the 10th anniversary of bloody student unrest in 1999 which happened in Tehran University and caused one student's death.

After the disputed June 12 presidential election, Iran has been the scene of a series of protests and unrest.

According to Press TV, Iran's police have arrested 457 people in the post-election violence which has left at least 20 dead and hundreds of others injured.

On June 29, the Guardian Council confirmed the vote result, announcing the election file as closed.
