Dutch wheelchair expedition across Himalayas

    KATHMANDU, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) on Thursday held a press conference, welcoming four Dutch handicapped people entering Nepal from Nepal-China border of Kodari, across the Himalayas on Wednesday by specially made wheelchairs.

    This is claimed to be the first time Hand Bike (Wheelchair) Expedition of Handicapped people entering Nepal by wheelchair from China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

    The team successfully completed the wheelchair journey expedition from Lhasa, capital of Tibet Autonomous Region of China, to Kathmandu, capital city of Nepal, within 15 days crossing 950 km distance.

    The objective of the Hand Bike Expedition of Handicapped people is to convey the message that the handicapped people also can achieve the feats with strong will power. The expedition is aimed at motivating and inspiring the handicapped people of the world.

    The team members said at the press conference that they wanted to have more adventure which other destinations do not offer. Sharing their experience in Nepal, they said that they were welcomed by pristine nature as soon as they entered Nepal.

    "The Hand Bike Expedition of Handicapped people from The Netherlands is expected to convey the message to the world that Nepal can be an adventure and fun destination for all categories of adventure seekers from around the world," a press release from NTB said.

    The expedition was organized by PALET Intermotions, a Dutch tour operator and funded by The Netherlands Handicapped Association and other Dutch organizations.
