RIO DE JANEIRO, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Monday that Brazil will be in conditions to debate with the rich countries as an equal in the upcoming Group of Eight (G8) Summit in Italy.
In his weekly radio show "Breakfast with the President," Lula said he believes that due to the current global economic scenario, no big decision can be made without taking into consideration the position of the so-called BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, China and India).
Lula also reaffirmed his stance that the Group of 20 (G20), gathering both developed and emerging countries, would be a better forum to discuss the crisis than the G8.
The G20 has a meeting scheduled for September.
Meanwhile, the Brazilian president complained that he is not seeing enough anti-crisis actions from the rich countries, noting that it is necessary to demand the accomplishment of the measures to be taken by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
He added that the hunger problem will be discussed on the G8 meeting, saying Brazil has much to teach the world on the subject, due to its social programs.
The president also commented on a new law which offers amnesty to the illegal immigrants in Brazil, which he signed last week. According to Lula, the law is another lesson Brazil is giving other countries, many of which have recently toughened the regulations against illegal immigration.
On Monday evening, Lula will meet with Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates. On Tuesday, he is scheduled to have a meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
