BELGRADE, July 6 (Xinhua) -- With five silver medals, the Chinese taekwondo team ended their journey at the 25th Universiade here on Monday.
Though the result was much better than they did last time at Bangkok Universiade, where they only took a silver, the five silver medals was still not satisfying.
According to Liu Zhanlu, team leader of the Chinese taekwondo team, the biggest problem of the team was lacking of experiences.
"Our players are too young," said Liu. "It's difficult for them to handle every detail well. It
is a pity that we take five silver but no gold. Actually, if the players could be more mature, we should have won some golds."
The Chinese team had gold chances since the first day of the taekwondo competition, but till the last day, they still couldn't grab one title.
The Chinese players settled for the silver medals in the women's team and the mixed team poomsae final last Thursday, and on last Friday, Zhang Qiang took the silver in the women's 47kg category.
Han Yingying and Wu Qiong were also favorites in the women's over 72kg and 55kg divisions respectively, however, no one triumphed in the final.
"Inexperience made our players fail to catch the opportunities," said Liu. "Some of them even made big mistakes during the final. But it was understandable, they are still too young and hardly participate in major competitions."
Besides regrets, there was also some progress.
"The mentality of our players are much better now," said the team leader. "They are much more confident than before, and I feel so happy about it. I believe we will do a better job at the next Universiade in Shenzhen."
South Korea fully demonstrated its dominance to the martial art by collecting seven gold medals, four silver and four bronze, while another 23 NOCs had a taste of the medals.
Iran finished second with three gold, one silver and one bronze, while Spain stayed third with three gold and one bronze.
