SANTIAGO, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Chile's Foreign Ministry said on Sunday that the decision made by the Organization of American States (OAS) to exclude Honduras is historic.
Chilean Deputy Foreign Minister Alberto Van Klaveren restated the country's condemnation of the coup in Honduras against the constitutional government of President Jose Manuel Zelaya and made a call for his return to office via peaceful means.
The OAS suspended on late Saturday Honduras' membership after the Central American country ignored an OAS ultimatum to reinstate coup ousted Zelaya.
A special session of the OAS general assembly has passed a resolution to immediately suspend the post-coup government in Honduras.
OAS chief Jose Miguel Insulza visited the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa on Friday but failed to persuade the post-coup government to restore Zelaya.
