"Ice Age 3" ties with "Transformers" in North America

    LOS ANGELES, July 5 (Xinhua) -- "Ice Age: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs" tied with "Transformers 2" at the top of weekend box office in North America, while the animated sequel set a new record overseas, preliminary figures showed Sunday.

    "Ice Age 3" from 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks' action sequel ended the Independence Day weekend in a draw, each grossing 42.5 million dollars in U.S. and Canadian theaters. It is expected that final box office figures released Monday will decide which film prevails.

    Meanwhile, "Ice Age 3" scored the biggest international opening of all time for an animated film, taking in 148 million dollars as it opened in more than 100 markets around the globe.

    The film opened in North American on Wednesday to take advantage of the U.S. Independence Day, which fell on Saturday this year, earning 67.5 million dollars in five days. It global opening gross is 215.5 million dollars.

    "Transformers 2" has grossed 293.4 million dollars in North America and 298 million dollars overseas, for a global total of 591.4 million dollars, since its worldwide release 12 days ago.

    Universal's gangster film "Public Enemies," starring Johnny Depp as a notorious depression-era bank robber, was in third place with 26.2 million dollars at the weekend box office in North America.

    Disney's romantic comedy "The Proposal" and Warn Bros.' R-rated comedy "The Hangover" were in fourth and fifth positions, with 12.8 million and 10.4 million dollars respectively over the weekend. ¡¡
