SINGAPORE, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese team defeated the Iranian team in boys' FIBA 33, three-on-three basketball finals at the first Asian Youth Games on Saturday.

    China won Iran by 29:26 in the finals. The Chinese team did not kick off smoothly in the match, following the Iranian 4:13 after the first period. The second period saw both teams gain seven points with the Chinese still falling nine points behind.

    However, the Chinese team turned the corner in the third period with more rebounds and two three-point shots and secured the gold after the 15-minute-competition.

    "We wanted to win so much and became a little too anxious at the beginning," said Chinese player Zhang Minghao, "But as we played along, we managed to adjust ourselves and find the right tactics for defense."

    The Chinese team coach Song Xi said, "The Iran team is very strong, and they have two tall players. Our players did not fit into the game at the start, but they successfully handled the stress and never stopped fighting for each point."

    "I think we won because of the strong determination," Song said.

    The bronze medal went to South Korea, who won the Philippines by 33:29.

    In the three-on-three basketball matches, the first team claiming 33 points wins the game. If neither of both teams get 33 points after a three-period, 15-minute-competition, the team with higher scores wins the game.

    The first Asian Youth Games is held in Singapore from June 29 to July 7, with some 1,400 athletes aged between 14 and 17 from 45 Olympic Council of Asia's members competing in 90 events across nine sports.
