Indonesia to invite Asia's 50 senior officials to watch presidential election

    JAKARTA, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Fifty senior officials from Asian region will be invited to see Indonesian presidential election scheduled on July 8, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

    The program called Indonesia Election Visitor Program (IEVP) will be held in cooperation between the ministry and the Institute for Peace and Democracy (IPD) at the Sheraton Bandara Hotel at Indonesia's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on July 6-9, 2009.

    During the activity, all participants will join a workshop titled "Indonesian Presidential Election: A Democratic Assessment". The workshop will discuss about Indonesia's reforms and political development, rules of Indonesian general elections and local political dynamics.

    Besides, coordinated with the Indonesian Community for Democracy (KID), all IEVP participants will monitor the election directly in several locations in Indonesia's cities.

    The program is one of follow up of Bali Democracy Forum (BDF) meeting's recommendation on December 10-11, 2008. The meeting recommended that political development and modernization in Asian region should be spread and shared through experience exchange between the regional countries.

    The countries that will participate in the IEVP are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Brunei, China, the Philippines, Iraq, Japan, Cambodia, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Kuwait, Laos, the Maldives, Myanmar, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Qatar, New Zealand, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste, United Arab Emirate, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
