TEHRAN, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Police Chief Brigadier General Ismail
Ahmadi Moqaddam said that some 1,032 people were detained during post-election
unrests in Tehran, the semi-official Fars news agency reported on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, Ahmadi Moqaddam said that most of
the detainees have been released, and "those who are still in detention have
been sent to the public and revolutionary courts in Tehran."
"The police action towards the illegal gatherings staged during the final
days of the unrests was completely legal ... and (the police) succeeded in
controlling the unrests with the least violence," he was quoted as saying by
Fars.
On June 13, the Iranian interior minister said the incumbent President
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won 62.63 percent of the total ballots, while his main rival
Mir-Hossein Mousavi got 33.75 percent.
The other two candidates, former parliament speaker Mehdi Karroubi and
former Revolutionary Guards Chief Mohsen Rezaei, got less than 2 percent of the
total ballots.
After the official declaration, all the three defeated candidates filed
complaints over irregularities in the election, while Mousavi and Karroubi have
demanded an annulment of the election.
Mousavi's supporters participated in massive rallies in Tehran and other
cities following the disputes.
Iran's state media said 20 people had been killed in related clashes.
