IED attack kills NATO soldier in E. Afghanistan

    KABUL, June 29 (Xinhua) -- A soldier with NATO -led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was killed in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack in eastern Afghanistan on Monday while another sustained injures in western region of the war -plagued country.

    "An International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) service member was killed in an IED strike in eastern Afghanistan this morning," said a press release of ISAF issued here on Monday.

    However, it did not disclose the nationality of the victim and the exact place of the incident by saying "it is ISAF policy not to release the nationality of any casualty prior to the relevant national authority doing so."

    International troops, mostly from U.S. have been stationed in the unrest eastern Afghanistan combating militants.

    In a separate incident, an Italian soldier with ISAF was injured as his vehicle struck a roadside bomb in western Afghan province of Herat on the same day Monday.

    An official with the press office of ISAF in western region Marco Amoreco told Xinhua that the incident occurred in Adraskan district near Herat city while the unit was on patrol.

    Taliban militants, fighting Afghan and international troops, have vowed to speed up their assaults as U.S. and its allies have sent additional troops into the war-torn country to curb Taliban-led violence ahead of presidential election on August 20.
