    TEGUCIGALPA, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Honduran President Jose Manuel Zelaya was ousted by a military coup on Sunday and was taken to Costa Rica. The following is some basic facts about the Central American country.

    Honduras is bordered to the west by Guatemala, to the southwest by El Salvador, to the southeast by Nicaragua, to the south by the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Fonseca and to the north by the Gulf of Honduras.

    It covers an area of more than 112,000 square km with an estimated population of 7,537,000. Its capital is Tegucigalpa.

    Zelaya, 56, took office in January 2006 after being elected president. His term expires in January 2010.

    Under Honduras'current constitution, a president serves a four-year term and is barred from seeking a second term.

    Zelaya was pushing for a referendum to change the constitution despite opposition from the Congress, the Supreme Court and the election commission.

    He was ousted on Sunday before the referendum was held.
