TEGUCIGALPA, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Honduran Congress announced on Sunday that Roberto Micheletti will replace Manuel Zelaya as the acting president of the country.
Zelaya was ousted by military early Sunday morning. He was seized by soldiers at his home and put onto a plane which took him to Costa Rica.
In his acceptance speech, Micheletti said "I want to swear before the nation that in the six months that God has allowed me, my commitment will be to reconcile the great Honduran family and to national dialogue."
In the same speech, Micheletti described his coming to power as "completely legal" and said he would "act with transparency".
Congress deputies, who were called to an emergency session at noon, agreed to Zelaya's removal after the secretary of the legislature, Jose Alfredo Saavedra, read an alleged resignation letter that Zelaya has denied to sign.
The letter read to Congress says that Zelaya had resigned due to "serious health problems".
But later in the day, speaking at a joint press conference with Costa Rica's President Oscar Arias Sanchez, Zelaya said "I have not resigned and I will never use this mechanism."
Speaking from Costa Rica capital San Jose, Zelaya described the military action that removed him from office as "a political conspiracy."
