    FUZHOU, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Linfa, the third tropical storm for this year, landed in east China's Fujian Province Sunday evening, packing winds at 23 meters per second at its eye.

    The storm landed in Dongshi Township in Jinjiang City at 8:30 p.m., said Xie Zhaonan, director of flood control headquarters of Quanzhou City, which administers Jinjiang.

    The storm was formed in the South China Sea Thursday afternoon and had downgraded from a strong tropical storm by the time of landing, according to the provincial meteorological bureau.

    It will bring heavy rains in coastal areas from Sunday night to Monday as it is moving northward, the bureau said.

    The shipping route between Xiamen and Jinmen was closed temporarily from Saturday. The Provincial Oceanic and Fisheries Bureau had recalled 30,000 fishing boats and 162,757 people working on these boats by 6 p.m. Sunday.

    The local government has sent more than 10 million text messages to mobile phone users, asking them to be alert of the storm.

East China braces for strong tropical storm Linfa

    FUZHOU, June 20 (Xinhua) -- As Linfa, the third tropical storm this year which has upgraded to strong tropical storm Saturday noon, people in east China are bracing for it.

    Formed in the South China Sea Thursday afternoon, the storm was located at 21.1 degrees north latitude and 117.8 degrees east longitude at 8 p.m. Saturday. It was about 330 kilometers from Zhangpu County in the eastern Fujian Province and is moving with a speed of 10 kilometers northwards towards the province, according to the Fujian Provincial Meteorological Observatory. China launches emergency alarm in face of tropical storm Linfa

    BEIJING, June 20 (Xinhua) -- The China Meteorological Administration, the country's meteorological authority, launched a level-III or orange emergency alarm on Saturday morning in the face of tropical storm Linfa.

    Linfa, the third tropical storm this year, was expected to land in the coastal areas between the eastern part of Guangdong Province and southern Fujian Province or move north along the Taiwan Strait, from between noon and night on Sunday, said the administration. Full story

Tropical storm Linfa approaches southern China

    FUZHOU, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm Linfa, the third this year, was moving towards China's mainland, local meteorological authorities said Friday.

    Formed in the South China Sea Thursday afternoon, the storm was located at 19.0 degrees north latitude and 117.5 degrees east longitude at 7 p.m. Friday. It was about 590 kilometers from Zhao'an County in the eastern Fujian Province and 500 km from Shantou, Guangdong. Full story
