PARIS, June 15 (Xinhua) -- France summoned the Iranian ambassador in Paris to express its concerns over a disputed presidential election won
by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Foreign Ministry said on Monday.
"We hoped that the ambassador would explain events in Iran and would hear our concerns," Foreign Ministry spokesman Eric Chevallier said in a statement.
The ministry condemned the "brutal repression of peaceful demonstrations" and demanded the release of a number of people arrested, which included political figures.
"France, like its European partners, is awaiting clear answers to the doubts raised over irregularities in the vote," Chevallier said.
Demonstrators clashed with police in Tehran over the weekend after Iranian authorities declared Ahmadinejad won the presidential ballot. Mir-Hossein Mousavi, Ahmadinejad's main rival, has denounced the vote as a fraud and has called for the cancellation of the results and new votes.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier had earlier summoned the Iranian ambassador in Berlin to protest against events in Iran, saying "the actions of Iranian security forces are completely unacceptable."
EU foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg doubted the results of the vote. EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana expressed his concerns over the events in Iran and hoped very much that "the will of the people will be respected."
