SRINAGAR, India-controlled Kashmir, June 6 (Xinhua) --
Protests and clashes continued in Muslim majority areas of India-controlled
Kashmir for the sixth consecutive day Saturday, officials and eyewitness said.
Police and paramilitary troopers deployed in
Srinagar, the summer capital of the region fired bullets and tear smoke
canisters to quell the demonstrations. Over a dozen people were injured in the
police action.
Local people have been protesting since Monday
seeking identification of the guilty behind the mysterious death of two women in
Shopian, 50 kilometers south of Srinagar, last Saturday.
Locals allege the two women, aged 17 and 23, were
first raped and then killed. They suspect the involvement of Indian troopers in
the incident.
The week-long protests over the incident have left
one person dead and at least 400 others injured, according to hospital
authorities in the region.
The Chief Minister of the Indian-controlled Kashmir,
Omar Abdullah, Monday ordered a judicial probe into the incident.
Police officials maintain the two women died after
drowning in a town stream.
Separatists in the region called a general strike on
Monday and prolonged it to build pressure on the government to identify the
culprits.
Normal life remained disrupted for the sixth
consecutive day in response to their strike call. Government offices, banks,
commercial units, business establishments and schools remained closed due to
shutdown. Traffic also remained off the roads.
