BAGHDAD, June 4 (Xinhua) -- An American soldier died of wounds sustained from a grenade attack in northern Iraq on Thursday, the U.S. military said.
The attack occurred when insurgents hurled a hand grenade on his patrol in the province of Kirkuk, a military statement said without elaboration.
Kirkuk is a volatile area which is home to a mix of Kurds, Arabs and Turkomans, who are in territorial dispute.
About 4,309 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the outbreak of Iraq war in March 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures.
