Flu cases continue to rise in Asia; nearly 400 in Japan

    HONG KONG, June 3 (Xinhua) -- The battle against A/H1N1 influenza continues to be a tough task for the Asia-Pacific region, as new confirmed cases are reported Wednesday in various places in the region.

    The total number of A/H1N1 infections in Japan rose to 396 on Wednesday after a few latest cases were reported.

    The Shizuoka prefectural government Wednesday announced that a man in his 20s, who was staying at a training facility in Shizuoka Prefecture, was confirmed to be infected with the influenza.

    The Chiba prefectural government and the Kobe municipal government also confirmed additional cases of infection.

    Chinese mainland reported two cases in the city of Fuzhou of Fujian Province, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 51 as of 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.

    South Korea's health authorities confirmed one more case of A/H1N1 flu virus infection on Wednesday, raising the number of confirmed cases to 42.

    The authorities said that a 16-year-old male student, who had returned from his studies in the United States, showed symptoms similar to the flu and thus went through close examinations.

    With the recent new cases, South Korea's A/H1N1 flu confirmation toll stands at 42.

    Of the total cases, only nine still remain in quarantine with the rest being released in good health.

    Health authorities of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region reported that one person was tested positive for the A/H1N1 virus on Wednesday, taking the number of confirmed cases of the disease in the city to 27.

    The case involved a 34-year-old man who returned to Hong Kong with his wife from New York by taking a flight of Cathay Pacific (Flight No. CX831, code share American Airlines AA6091) in the evening of June 2. He sat in row 34 of the flight.

    Singapore confirmed two more cases of Influenza A/ H1N1, bringing the number of total cases here to 11, the country's Health Ministry said on Wednesday night.

    One of the newly confirmed patients is a 33-year-old Singaporean female who was in New York from May 23 to 30, the other patient is an 18-year old American female visitor. Both patients were on Singapore Airlines SQ25 from New York via Frankfurt to Singapore. The flight arrived here on June 1.

    The ministry said the two patients have been admitted to local hospital, and laboratory results confirmed their infection on Wednesday.

    The Philippine authorities on Wednesday ordered suspension of classes in a major university in Manila after one of the school's foreign exchange students was found to have been infected with theA/H1N1 influenza virus.

    The Department of Health said the patient was a 21-year-old female student of the De La Salle University who arrived in the country on May 12. School authorities were only alerted after she reported flu-like symptoms on May 29, four days later when classes started after a two-month summer break.

    The health authorities did not reveal where the student came from and how many people she had close contact with but only said in a press release that according to initial findings "there is very limited exposure of other students to the confirmed case."

    Classes will be suspended at the University from Thursday till June 14, the health department said, adding that all the students, including those who are not in the same class with the patient, are advised to do self-monitoring of symptoms at home.

    With the latest case, the total number of confirmed flu A/H1N1 cases in the Philippines amounted to 22, 14 of whom have recovered and returned home after quarantined treatment in hospital.
