BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- China said Tuesday that it believed the United Nations Security Council's response to the Korean nuclear issue should be conducive to the goal of achieving denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula, opposing nuclear proliferation and maintaining peace and stability in northeast Asia.

"China has always taken a positive, serious and responsible attitude in negotiations of the UN Security Council on the related issue, " Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Qin Gang told a regular press briefing here on Tuesday.

The five permanent members of the UN Security Council, along with Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK), met Monday to continue discussions about a possible resolution on the recent nuclear test by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). They started talks based on the text of a draft resolution last Thursday.

The DPRK has been under UN sanctions that prevent the nation from nuclear and ballistic activity since its first atomic test in2006. An April 5 rocket launch, which the DPRK said it put a satellite into orbit, prompted the Security Council to adopt a presidential statement to condemn the launch and tighten the sanctions.
