HOUSTON, May 20 (Xinhua) -- A 13-year-old boy from
Tucson, Arizona, died with A/H1N1 flu virus, bringing the death toll to three in
the state, local health officials said on Wednesday.
Patti Woodcock, spokeswoman for the Pima County
Health Department in Arizona, said the boy died on Friday of complications from
the A/H1N1 flu.
She said the boy had been hospitalized since May 10
and several of his family members were also ill with the virus and most have
recovered. One sibling remains hospitalized, she added.
Arizona is one of the states hardest-hit by the
outbreak of A/H1N1 flu virus in the United States. The confirmed cases of the
A/H1N1 flu reached to 488 in the state on Wednesday, with two deaths not
including the 13-year-old boy.
Nationwide, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) reported more than 5,700 confirmed and probable cases of A/H1H1
flu in 47 states and Washington, D.C. If the latest deaths in Utah and Arizona
are confirmed, the death toll reaches to 10.
Health officials believe that those hospitalized with
the infection who have underlying health problems fare worse than otherwise
healthy people who also have been hospitalized.
"The most common conditions were chronic lung
disease, conditions associated with immunosuppression, chronic heart disease,
obesity and pregnancy," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, the CDC's interim deputy
director for science and public health program.
