China reports suspected case of A/H1N1 flu in Tibet, case in Guangdong confirmed

    BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Health Tuesday said an Italian tourist suspected of having the A/H1N1 flu virus was being treated at a hospital in southwestern Tibet Autonomous Region.

    The 42-year-old female, whose name was not disclosed by the ministry, was "in a stable condition" at a hospital in Zham town, bordering Nepal. A total of 23 foreign nationals who traveled withher were quarantined at a local hotel, said the ministry.

    The woman flew to Nepal from Italy on May 12. Three days later she developed a sore throat, stuffy nose and sweating. She had a fever with a body temperature of 38.5 degrees Celsius at entry into Tibet at Zham on Saturday. She was then sent to the hospital.

    Tibet's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted laboratory tests Monday, and the result was A/H1N1 positive. The ministry said the national CDC will double-check thetest.

    If confirmed, the woman will be the fifth A/H1N1 flu patient and the first foreign patient found on the Chinese mainland since the first case was reported on May 11.

    A taskforce with six experts from the ministry has arrived in Lhasa and headed for the China-Nepal border.

    Earlier on Tuesday, the health ministry confirmed a man in southern Guangdong Province, who recently returned from a tour of the United States and Canada, tested positive for the A/H1N1 flu.

    The man, surnamed Yang, flew to Hong Kong via the Republic of Korea. He then took a train to Guangdong on Friday.

    His temperature had returned to a normal level of 36.6 degrees Celsius as of Monday and his symptoms of a sore throat and cough had abated, said Yin Zhibiao, vice president with the No. 8 People's Hospital where Yang has been treated.

    Among 93 others who had close contact with the patient, 75 had been found and quarantined, while doctors are looking for the rest18, said Zhang Yonghui, director of the Guangdong provincial center for disease control and prevention.

    Guangdong is on high alert to the flu. Another 110 hospitals inthe province were designated for treatment of the disease.

    Of the other three cases, the patients in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, and in Jinan, Shandong Province, have been discharged from hospital following treatment.

    The patient in Beijing, an 18-year-old woman surnamed Liu, willbe discharged from hospital the coming weekend if all test resultsremain normal in the next three days, the municipal health bureau announced Tuesday.

Beijing A/H1N1 patient to be discharged from hospital

    BEIJING, May 19 (Xinhua) -- Beijing's first confirmed A/H1N1 flu patient is in a stable condition, and will be discharged from hospital this weekend, the municipal health bureau announced Tuesday.

    The 18-year-old woman, surnamed Liu, a student who had returned from the United States, was confirmed to have the flu Saturday and is being treated at the Beijing Ditan Hospital. Full story

China's 2nd confirmed A/H1N1 flu patient discharged from hospital

    JINAN, May 19 (Xinhua) -- China's second confirmed A/H1N1 influenza patient was discharged from hospital at 9 a.m. Tuesday after eight days of treatment in this capital of east China's Shandong Province.

    Chen Shijun, director of the Infectious Disease Hospital in Jinan, where the patient surnamed Lu was treated, confirmed that lab tests of the flu patient's saliva samples proved negative for A/H1N1 influenza virus on Monday. Full story

Quarantine ends for 38 exposed to Shandong A/H1N1 flu case

    JINAN, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Quarantine ended Monday evening for the 38 people who were exposed to the mainland's second confirmed A/H1N1 influenza case in the eastern Shandong Province, a government spokesman said.

    The 38, including 35 passengers and three crew members who had close contacts with flu patient surnamed Lu in the same car of train D41 from Beijing to Shandong's capital Jinan on May 11, didn't show any symptom of being infected during the seven days in quarantine, said Li Zhongjun, spokesman of the Shandong provincial health department. China calls for int'l co-op in tackling A/H1N1 flu outbreak 

    GENEVA, May 18 (Xinhua) -- International cooperation must be carried out for a global response to the current A/H1N1 influenza outbreak, Chinese Health Minister Chen Zhu said here on Monday.

    "Economic globalization has led to a global transmission of diseases. To address this global challenge, a better way is to take global actions," Chen said in a speech to the 62nd World Health Assembly (WHA). Full story

    GUANGZHOU, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese health authorities have begun tracing passengers who may have traveled in the same train carriage with a man who was reported Monday to be a new suspected case of A/H1N1 flu on the mainland.
