Nepal marks World Hypertension Day

    KATHMANDU, May 17 (Xinhua) -- The Nepal Hypertension Control Society is celebrating on Sunday the World Hypertension Day by organizing various public awareness programs throughout the year, according to the National News Agency RSS.

    The theme of the World Hypertension Day this year is "Salt and Hypertension: Two Unseen Causes of Death".

    Hypertension is the only cause that claims the lives of the largest number of people in the world. Hundreds of thousands of people die due to brain hemorrhage, cardiac arrest and kidney diseases that result from hypertension.

    The society said the problem of hypertension can be reduced even by giving proper advice to the general public for reducing their salt intake.

    According to the society, every year, some 7 million people die due to hypertension and related causes in the world.

    Doctors have advised people to have their blood pressure measurements taken on a regular basis to ascertain whether they have hypertension problem.
