NEW DELHI, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Students of Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh in northern India, have developed artificial cartilage that can give relief to osteo-arthritis patients, Hindi daily Danik Jagran reported Friday.
The institute's Biological Studies laboratory head Dr. Ashok Kumar told the paper that studies on rats have proved that artificial cartilage has all assets of natural cartilage and work is now on pre clinic trails on it.
Once destroyed, cartilage in human body does not have tendency to regenerate, so the artificial cartilage has been developed using freezing technique on cryogen as cartilage regenerates very well in cryogen, said the report.
The cartilage gets destroyed, especially in knees, due to ageing or injury.
The artificial cartilage will be able to replace the destroyed part of cartilage even in a way better than natural cartilage, relieving pain in patients, said the report.
